Indian movies and the ever eluding Oscars

India is a producer largest number of movies in the world, and its only three times that our movie has been found good enough to be nominated by the so called Academy awards in a best Foreign film category, let alone winning it

India's first ever entry to the Oscar Mother India got the nomination for the best foreign film, but couldn't win it at the Academy members didn't like the ending, and after that there was a long wait of 31 years.Salaam Bombay, a movie based on the miserable lives of street kids of Bombay, Mira nair was unlucky to lose it out. And, we all know about legendary lagaan which lose out to No man's land, so close but yet so far.It was after Lagaan that we started taking Oscars seriously.Even, last years hopes were raised with Rang de basanti, it didn't make the cut.

There is no denying the fact that majority of movies made in India are absolutely crap, but the same can't be said about the indian cinema of 50's and 60's with greats like Guru dutt, Satyajit ray, Shyam benegal, and many other.Satyajit ray won the Oscar for life time achievement in Cinema, but its ironic that none of his movies were found good enough by the Academy to be nominated

Is it coincidence, or just me that all the movies which were nominated showed India as a third world country, where everyone leads a miserable life, and thats how they perceive India.Thats exactly why movie like Rang de basanti failed to get the nomination

List of indian movies sent to oscars, I was shocked to see the name like Jeans in this list, what the fuck were they thinking when they sent that movie, aren't we suppose to send the best movie out of India.

What are Oscars anyway, they are just awards for Hollywood movies and they think oh they should give little one to foreign movie. Shekhar kapoor had once said that it all depends on market, India is not a market for Hollywood movies, so it won't be getting any Oscars. So why the fuck we should care about the Oscars, when our movies have won awards in almost every international Film festival. The only thing Oscar does is gives you immense publicity, which we can get if we keep making good movies

I think we should stop sending our movies to the Oscars, its like we are craving for their recognition and accepting that they are superior.Even Hollywood makes crap movies, its just that they have millions and millions of dollars to spend on their movies. The directors in India are handicapped by limited resources and funds.
